I don't recall when I first realized
that through science
my world could be explained clearly
without magic
or smoke and mirrors
I am embarrassed to say I was an adult
before this realization kicked in
And I can't tell you how profound
how wondrous
and how beautiful
is life
as a result of science
unraveling the mysteries
that held me prisoner for so long
I have never felt freer
and more accepting of growing old
and facing the inevitability that the atoms
circulating throughout my body
will eventually move on permanently
There is no fear
because my beginning was not where life started
nor my ending where it will end
My atoms will continue living long after I
have breathed my last breath
What if the forest
set over the sky?
And up was down
and darkness light?
If truths were false
and wrongs were right?
Or I was you
and you were I?
What if poems
refused to rhyme
and orange was lemon
and chocolate lime?

The sun must be a perfectionist
for it rises every day
as if it somehow failed to get it right

The moon, on the other hand
is content to rise
when it darn well feels like it
